A WC e-mailing list would seem like the most natural solution to me. Everybody has an e-mail they check with somewhat regular frequency. The same cannot be said of twitter.

Twitter can be two way communication rather than emails. People can also search @WC to see others who try to communicate with WC. Board sent emails can not be sent when there is no board, in case something happened.

I don't actually bother checking my e-mails unless I'm expecting a message anyway, and I'm sure plenty of other are the same. I, for one, am not going to change my habits just for one site.

On the other hand, I doubt many people are going to set up Twitter accounts to follow just one account. I guess whatever you do, nobody's going to be pleased. Though, just something to give status updates when the site/forum's down would be good.

Eh, I check my emails all the time.

But yeah, I'm not gonna get Twitter just to follow WCF which, frankly, won't be updated THAT much.

I would join a mailing list though /o\

It could also be possible to use an RSS feed to display important updates.

All of the popular browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Opera, IE, Safari) have RSS support. I suggest this because:

A. No one will have to sign up on another website (like twitter) to get any updates.
B. You won't have to open your e-mail client to check for a new update (which can be a little nuisance if you don't use your e-mail that often).
C. It's a little lighter on the server then sending a many e-mails, like how we have 540 registered users (ATM), that would be a but load of e-mails, where an RSS feed might only be checked by only the active members (I'm estimating 50 members right now).
D. It's really simple to set one up. I've created scripts automated scripts before that can do this stuff for you.
E. RSS is really easy to use.

Edit:
Grammatical Errors.

I approve of this statement.

Edit:
Grammatical Errors.

A: you don't have to sign up to access twitter, check my account without signing up: http://twitter.com/atmey
B: I use gmail and igoogle, my email is displayed whenever my browser is opened. Also I use iPhone email, but this is irrelevant
C: You don't even need a server/hosting to use twitter, this would work best in worst case scenario: there is no WC anymore, site down, no more hosting, email addresses lost, etc.

And btw: Twitter has RSS feeds for each separate account

Updort time!

Last night I decided that we may as well stay put with our current host. You see, looking at numerous hosts over several months, I have found that I struggle to get a similar service to the one we currently have for a lower price than we pay. Suffice to say, having no caps on a number of parameters makes things so much nicer- while with most hosts the bandwidth and storage limits aren't a concern presently, if Wars Wiki and then the forum were to become much more active in the near future we may have run into some issues.

So yes, I'll be buying into a longer contract at some point next week, meaning that we're staying where we are, ergo no downtime ohmy.gif

*unpacks his bags*

So, we are staying, then? Well, it's good that there won't be any downtime after all.

Ah, I am thinking of using dreamhost, what do you think about them?
I am still undecided between dreamhost, hostgator and brinkster. Dreamhost seems the best option yet.

Dreamhost have unlimited bandwidth, disk storage, subdomains, email accounts and FTP accounts... you quite often get live help, meaning an issue can be resolved in ten minutes rather than 1 hour +. They have lots of "one click installs" that are useful, Mediawiki and Wordpress being two... yeah, when I was looking at alternative hosts I couldn't find any better.

Also if you sign up, I can refer you... when I work out how. Just let me know if/when you've decided.
